Welcome

Ladies and Gentlemen, my dear Colleagues,

It is our great pleasure to cordially invite you to the 8th International Symposium on Arterial Stiffness organized by the Hungarian Society of Arterial Stiffness (HSAS) and to the 6th Congress of our Society.

According to our previous decision of visiting the hometowns of our famous Universities this time the Symposium will be held in the city of Szeged from 20th to 22nd April, 2012.

We are proud that the International Symposium and the National Congress of the Hungarian Society of Arterial Stiffness traditionally presents the most outstanding experts to lectures - whom one can hardly meet at the national events.

The main topic of our scientific meeting in 2012 will be the relation between arterial stiffness and the increased activity of the sympathetic nerve system. Its significance lies in the fact that pronounced changes of the sympathetic nerve system can be observed in cases of diabetes and obesity - considered to be the so-called endemics of our age. The arterial function - remarkably affected by the sympathetic activity - may help to determine the actual symphatetic tone and follow the therapeutic effects. Apart from the main topic, the result of a follow-up study, performed in Hungary in the last few years will be published for the first time - measuring arterial function parameters and studying their relations to cardiovascular morbidity and mortality.

Again, we would like to award the best poster and the best lecture as well, hoping that we can contribute to the financial support of researchers interested in the field of arterial function - albeit in our modest way.

During the past 8 years our event became a tradition; characterized by intense activities and high-standard scientific discussions. We do hope that at our following, 8th International Symposium and 6th National Congress we will stay true to our traditions. Therefore every participant is highly welcome to dignify our Congress with his/her presence. We certainly believe that Szeged, the "City of Sunlight", will provide an excellent place for a precious and successful Symposium next spring.

Yours truly,

Miklós Illyés
